{"id":431,"date":"2012-06-02T18:18:41","date_gmt":"2012-06-03T01:18:41","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/tabithahart.net\/?p=431"},"modified":"2012-06-06T14:43:03","modified_gmt":"2012-06-06T21:43:03","slug":"public-ethnography","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/tabithahart.net\/?p=431","title":{"rendered":"Public ethnography"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>I recently presented some of my dissertation research at a conference on public ethnography, organized by the folks behind the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.publicethnography.net\/about\" target=\"_blank\">e.m.a.c. network<\/a>. \u00a0The idea behind &#8220;public ethnography&#8221; is much like that behind &#8220;public scholarship.&#8221; \u00a0Namely, that academic work should be useful in the real world, that it should have connections to people&#8217;s lives and lived experiences, and that it must be used to improve people&#8217;s situations, at least in some small way.<\/p>\n<p>At the conference <a href=\"http:\/\/communication-culture.school.royalroads.ca\/dr-phillip-vannini\" target=\"_blank\">Dr. Phillip Vannini<\/a> gave a very interesting talk on how researchers can make their ethnographic work\u00a0public, thus achieving some of these goals. \u00a0In his talk he discussed the following tips and strategies:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>For every journal article that you write, produce a magazine article too. \u00a0Since fieldwork often involves travel, sometimes to unusual destinations, it can be good and translatable material for popular outlets.<\/li>\n<li>Collaborate with journalists. \u00a0Give them time, interviews, and material for stories.<\/li>\n<li>Focus on the local. \u00a0Emphasize how your work speaks to issues of local importance and relevance.<\/li>\n<li>Radio is often a more accessible medium than TV, so try doing stories and\/or interviews for radio stations.<\/li>\n<li>If you&#8217;re on the web, be sure to cross-link between channels. \u00a0Don&#8217;t just post a blog article &#8212; tweet about it, link to your research videos (if you have them) and to other sites that you are present on.<\/li>\n<li>Look to local media outlets. \u00a0If you can get your stories picked up by local channels, there&#8217;s a chance that they&#8217;ll be picked up by larger ones, too.<\/li>\n<li>Invest in learning about public relations. \u00a0Publicity doesn&#8217;t happen by wishful thinking.<\/li>\n<li>Carefully consider the audience and the medium for each story and adapt the content accordingly.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>For more details on these points, see Phillip&#8217;s post <a href=\"http:\/\/www.publicethnography.net\/projects\/early-reflections-public-ethnography\" target=\"_blank\">&#8220;Early reflections on public ethnography&#8221;<\/a> on the e.m.a.c. network website.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>I recently presented some of my dissertation research at a conference on public ethnography, organized by the folks behind the e.m.a.c. network. \u00a0The idea behind &#8220;public ethnography&#8221; is much like that behind &#8220;public scholarship.&#8221; \u00a0Namely, that academic work should be useful in the real world, that it should have connections to people&#8217;s lives and lived [&hellip;]<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":1,"featured_media":0,"comment_status":"open","ping_status":"open","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":[],"categories":[10,18,7],"tags":[],"_links":{"self":[{"href":"https:\/\/tabithahart.net\/index.php?rest_route=\/wp\/v2\/posts\/431"}],"collection":[{"href":"https:\/\/tabithahart.net\/index.php?rest_route=\/wp\/v2\/posts"}],"about":[{"href":"https:\/\/tabithahart.net\/index.php?rest_route=\/wp\/v2\/types\/post"}],"author":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/tabithahart.net\/index.php?rest_route=\/wp\/v2\/users\/1"}],"replies":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/tabithahart.net\/index.php?rest_route=%2Fwp%2Fv2%2Fcomments&post=431"}],"version-history":[{"count":11,"href":"https:\/\/tabithahart.net\/index.php?rest_route=\/wp\/v2\/posts\/431\/revisions"}],"predecessor-version":[{"id":451,"href":"https:\/\/tabithahart.net\/index.php?rest_route=\/wp\/v2\/posts\/431\/revisions\/451"}],"wp:attachment":[{"href":"https:\/\/tabithahart.net\/index.php?rest_route=%2Fwp%2Fv2%2Fmedia&parent=431"}],"wp:term":[{"taxonomy":"category","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/tabithahart.net\/index.php?rest_route=%2Fwp%2Fv2%2Fcategories&post=431"},{"taxonomy":"post_tag","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/tabithahart.net\/index.php?rest_route=%2Fwp%2Fv2%2Ftags&post=431"}],"curies":[{"name":"wp","href":"https:\/\/api.w.org\/{rel}","templated":true}]}}
